Graz-Lebring, Austria and Ithaca, NY, USA - October 5, 2007: SensorDynamics AG, a leading company in fail-safe inertial microsensor systems, and Kionix, Inc., a global leader in the design and manufacture of MEMS inertial sensors, announced today their signed license agreement granting SensorDynamics access to Kionix’s MEMS gyroscope portfolio.
Kionix currently supplies a broad array of silicon-micromachined, multi-dimensional accelerometers to enable applications in both the consumer electronics and automotive industries. A pioneer in MEMS technology and a leader in the 3D accelerometer market, Kionix relies on a broad portfolio of intellectual property that targets MEMS design, fabrication methods and test technology as it relates to single- and multi-dimensional accelerometers and gyroscopes.
SensorDynamics is positioning itself into the high-end and fail-safe inertial sensor market with a focus on automotive applications. This license agreement will strengthen SensorDynamics’ IP portfolio and provide freedom in the design and customization of MEMS gyroscope sensor elements that are manufactured by means of a thick, poly-silicon technology at FhG/ISIT in Germany/Itzehoe. By combining the MEMS gyroscope sensor element with a sophisticated ASIC in a single package, SensorDynamics will fulfill the tough, fail-safe requirements of the automotive industry.
‘We are very pleased about this agreement with Kionix,” said Hubertus Christ, CEO of SensorDynamics. “We see a great deal of potential in our mutually-beneficial cooperation in that we are working in similar and concurrent areas with huge synergies.”
Gregory Galvin, Ph.D., President and CEO of Kionix, is equally satisfied with the association: “We are very impressed with Sensor Dynamics’ experience in automotive markets and their unique fail-safe solutions. Our two companies have a number of complimentary capabilities, and we look forward to a fruitful partnership.”
Kionix, founded in 1993, is located in Ithaca, New York, USA. The Company pioneered high-aspect-ratio, silicon micromachining based on original research conducted at Cornell University, and has earned a global reputation for excellence in MEMS product design, process engineering and manufacturing. Inertial sensor innovations developed by Kionix are used today in a wide range of applications including hard disk drive protection, computer and video gaming, GPS-assist, sports diagnostics and vehicle stability among others. The Company offers the industry’s broadest family of MEMS inertial sensors including single-, dual-, and tri-axis accelerometers, gyroscopes and unique combination sensors. Kionix’s MEMS products are used in diverse industries such as automotive, consumer electronics and biotechnology. Kionix is ISO9001:2000 and TS16949 registered.
